Case studies

SUSTRACK will select case studies that are facing critical challenges within the current linear system and requiring a sustainable transition to circular biobased systems most urgently. These case studies will be selected within the four most carbon-intensive sectors, identified in the Bioeconomy Strategy, as industrial sectors that are relevant for the decarbonization of the EU economy, specifically:

the construction sector which requires a shift from concrete- to timber – based systems

the textile sector which requires a shift from fossil based to bio-based fibres

the (fine) chemical sector which requires a transition to renewable carbon sources and biorefineries to complement the pulp and paper sector

the plastic sector which requires a shift from fossil to bio-based polymers

The Case Studies will  be exploited to assess the environmental, social and economic impacts of the sustainable transition, and will allow comparability of circular, bio-based versus linear, fossil-based production systems.
